A historic steam engine will make a few local stops along its route.

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s only operating Big Boy locomotive, left Cheyenne, Wyoming August 5th.

The train is scheduled for a stop in Hearne on Sunday (August 15).  It will depart Monday for a stop in Navasota, arriving at 10:25 a.m.  The engine will be at the intersection of McAlpine Street and Railroad Street until 11:15 a.m.

After leaving Navasota, the train will head to Hempstead, stopping at the Wilkins Street crossing at 11:55 a.m. and leaving at 12:40 p.m.  It will then travel to Houston, where it will be on display Tuesday before heading through East Texas and eventually Louisiana.

This is the locomotive’s first tour since it was restored for 2019’s “Great Race” tours celebrating the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s completion.

  1. I’m sure that thousands of people would love to see this amazing feat of engineering if it ran the Great NYC line and happened to stop by here in Rochester, N Y. The East Coast has a huge number of rail fans.

  2. When will Big Boy be in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago area? This is a once in a lifetime event that i can tell my adult children about. They’ll love it.

  3. My daughter and I took her 3 kids to Vinita and Pryor Oklahoma to see Big Boy because her 5 year old Ronan is obsessed with trains…..especially Big Boy! It was worth the 4 hour trip! Big Boy is amazing and awesome and HUGE! We hadn’t realized just how many people of all ages would show up to see him. It was incredible. If you get the chance don’t miss the Big Boy experience. It may be the only one you get.

  4. We are looking forward to the St Louis stop and are traveling from just west of Indianapolis. I’m so excited to see him. Health is not great but I would still go anywhere to see this magnificent machine.

    1. Hi. We thought of traveling to St Louis too. It will likely not be viewable up close as it is a static showing where hundreds will be lined up to maybe get a glimpse? Parking in STL will be a nightmare due to ongoing construction. We went to Parsons KS last Thurs. It was perfect as the Big Boy rolled in, it was backed on a siding off the main UP line! Many fans got up close, standing right next to take photos of the immense Big Boy! Our suggestion is to view the Big Boy at one of it’s overnight stays in a small town setting, not in a mega city dealing with the likely limited access. Safe travels!

  5. Will the Big Boy make some tours to the East Coast such as to Baltimore, Md; Washington DC; Philadelphia etc.
There are lots and lots of railway fans there.
    Thank you

    Please let me know.
    A crazy train enthusiastic

  6. If you like trains this is the one to see I viewed it from an overpass once and you could fit a VW bug in the smoke stack.

  7. An amazing piece of engineering even to this day. One of the Santa Fe steam locomotives is about to be ready for steam excursion tours soon can’t remember the number though.
