Sometimes something good can come out of a bad experience.  That’s what happened to Brenham Fire Department Captain Tank Nienstedt.  In the fall of 2020 he was hospitalized at Brenham’s  Baylor Scott & White with COVID.  He says he doesn’t remember much about the first few days in the hospital:

Tanks wife Susan and two young girls, Lucy and Lily, were unable to visit him in the hospital due to COVID, so they had to rely on the nurses at Baylor Scott & White to let them know how Tank was doing.

Fast forward to this summer, when one Saturday morning, Tank’s youngest, 8 year old Lily, woke up and decided she wanted to do a drink stand in front of their house.  She made up a sign and loaded up a cooler with drinks and ice and headed to the end of the driveway to sell drinks.  Lily’s mother Susan explains:

Lily raised $40, and last week, Lily and her 10 year old sister Lucy went to the store and picked out drinks and snacks for the hospital staff.  They even made motivational notes and taped them to the snacks.  Lucy explains:

They delivered the basket of snacks, which the girls like to call their inspiration box, to Brenham’s Baylor Scott & White hospital.  They said if someone is feeling tired or sad they could come for a drink or snack and it might make them feel better.

The family is so grateful to the staff at Brenham’s Baylor Scott & White hospital for taking good care of Tank, and are thankful for the hard work they do to keep others safe during the pandemic.

  1. Such awesome little girls with texas sized hearts! As a nurse, I can assure you that this was so appreciated. Sometimes a family member won’t leave a bedside to eat. Thank you girls. And god bless you Tank. Loved ya then. Love ya now. You big tough lug!

  2. This is truly “Giving Back” to those who are on the front lines during the pandemic and any other situations. People should take note of the example set by these two young ladies.

  3. This is what needs to be reported more often. the good news and heart warming story. This is what America is about caring for other.

  4. What a sweet gesture for Lily to do this for our heroes in the medical field. God calls Christian’s to pour out to others. The Bible is saturated with scriptures’ commanding us to help the sick, care for the poor and be generous to others. Evidently Lily and Lucy have wonderful parents who have instilled this in their heart. This makes my heart happy.
Thank you for sharing this uplifting story.
