BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD RENEWS DISTRICT OF INNOVATION PLAN

Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin discusses the District of Innovation Plan that would go on to be renewed Monday by the Brenham School Board.

The Brenham School Board voted unanimously Monday to renew Brenham ISD’s District of Innovation Plan for an additional five years.

The plan allows the district to exempt itself from certain provisions in Texas Education Code to provide more local control.

Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin said the renewed plan has no changes from when it was first adopted by trustees in February 2017.

The three exemptions requested by Brenham ISD pertain to the first day of instruction, teacher certifications and employment contracts for newly hired teachers.

The exemption for the start of school allows the district to move the first day of class before the fourth Monday of August, in order to better balance instructional time in the fall and spring semesters and allow students to be out of school by Memorial Day.

The teacher certification exemption frees the district from current teacher certification requirements when hiring dual credit instructors and Career Technical Educators, giving the ability to designate industry experts or professors to teach those classes.

The employment contract exemption permits Brenham ISD to issue two-year probationary contracts, instead of the traditional one-year timeframe, allowing a longer evaluation period for experienced teachers that are new to Brenham ISD.

During his monthly report, Dr. Chaplin reviewed a list of public meetings and facility open tour dates in March and April to discuss the $153.9 million bond election in May.  At these meetings, citizens will be able to walk through Brenham ISD facilities and ask questions about the proposed bond.  More events will be scheduled in the coming weeks.  The full list of dates is posted at www.brenhamisd.net.
