BELLVILLE ISD EXPLORING ANOTHER POTENTIAL SCHOOL BOND ELECTION

Could another Bellville ISD Bond Election be on the horizon?

Bellville Superintendent Dr. Nicole Poenitzsch told the School Board at their recent meeting that there have been preliminary committee hearings since the previous bond election failed last year.

Poenitzsch said that what a future bond proposal could look like has not been determined. Their main concern is the O’Bryant Intermediate School, which currently houses the 4th and 5th graders.

The most recent bond was on the ballot in November 2021.  It had two propositions on it.

The first proposition, valued at $104.6 million, would have built a new high school, demolished O’ Bryant Intermediate, and provided for roof, HVAC, and window replacements at the other campuses.  The Intermediate students would have been shifted to Bellville Junior High, while the Junior High students would have moved into the current Bellville High School.  It was voted down 1,806 to 966.

The second proposition would have added a sports complex containing new baseball and softball fields, and new tennis courts.  The price tag was $7.8 million.  It was voted down 2,021 to 758.

Poenitzsch told the Board that they have a preliminary list of items, but they want to understand the costs first before moving forward.

She is planning for a GLS architect to be at the next meeting later this month to address their concerns.

Bellville ISD is hopeful of submitting a proposal to the Board of Trustees in January 2023, and with a goal of having a bond issue placed on the ballot in May 2023.
