WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS PROPOSE REDUCED TAX RATE

Washington County Commissioners formally proposed a tax rate lower than that of the prior fiscal year at their meeting today (Tuesday).

Members of the Chappell Hill Garden Club present Washington County EMS on Tuesday with a donation of $3,000.

The proposed rate of $0.3860 per $100 valuation consists of $0.2956 for maintenance and operations, $0.0826 for road and bridge, and $0.0078 for debt service.  It is $0.1172 less than the previous tax rate of $0.5032, above the no new revenue rate of $0.3668 and slightly lower than the voter approval rate of $0.3863.

The average taxable value of a home in the county has risen from $216,535 to $243,552, but the amount of taxes on the average home is projected to drop from $1,089 to $940.  The tax levy from the rate is expected to generate $23,369,925 in revenue, $1,004,602 more than 2021's levy.

The court also proposed a tax rate of $0.3738 per $100 for residents of the Pecan Glen subdivision to fund road improvements.  The rate is made up of all debt service.  It is higher than the no new revenue rate of $0.1266 and just under the voter approval rate of $0.3739.

Formal adoption of both tax rates is scheduled for September 13th.

Also at today’s meeting, commissioners:

  • Approved an interlocal agreement between the county and Burton ISD to provide a school resource officer for the school district. Burton ISD will pay the officer’s salary, while the county will provide the vehicle, uniforms and training.
  • Accepted a $3,000 donation from the Chappell Hill Garden Club for Washington County EMS.
  • Approved going out for requests for proposals (RFPs) for security cameras at the Washington County Jail. RFPs will be due to the county on September 1st at noon, and will be opened at 1 p.m.
  • Approved the purchase of a used pickup truck from LaRoche Chevrolet for the Engineering and Development Services department for $18,000.
  • Approved a grant application for a feral hog trapping program.

  1. ANYTHING to lower what ive been paying. Im only a few yrs from being taxed out of my home the way its been going. Actual value of the house/property is dropping, but the taxes keep going up. Im at 2x’s the value now, its ridiculous….if you cant afford the taxes, you lose the property, thats not true ownership at all….

    1. I’m in the same boat as many folks in this area. We are caught in the middle and there’s no safety net. I can not go back to work because of illness an I don’t qualify for any program. But everyone wants to buy my house for minimal purchase price. I hold our city council at fault for unnecessary spending and school board for trying to brow beat our taxpayers on a new school. That CAN wait. Never seen a more privileged staff on both sides that need to be voted out.
