The Heart of Texas Corvair Club will hold its 25th anniversary regional meeting on Friday and Saturday, making stops across Brenham and the county.
The Corvair was designed by Chevrolet in the 1960s to compete with the Volkswagen Beetle. It is the only American-made, mass-produced passenger car to have a rear-mounted, air-cooled engine.
The club’s activities begin on Friday with a full day of cruising around the county, opening with a historic tour of Brenham and a stop at Blue Bell Creameries. Members will then drive to Chappell Hill for lunch and a visit to the Chappell Hill Lavender Farm. After that, the group will go to the Antique Rose Emporium before gathering at The Barnhill Center for a Cinco de Mayo celebration.
Saturday kicks off with the cars participating in the Brenham Maifest parade, followed by a car show highlighting the vehicles at Henderson Park from noon to 3 p.m. Around 30 Corvairs are expected, and visitors to the show will be able to vote for their favorite one. The day concludes with a banquet at The Barnhill Center.
The group was founded in 1997 with four clubs: Corvair Houston, North Texas Corvair Association – DFW Area, Alamo City Corvair Association and Lone Star Corvair Club – Austin. Greg Wrobleske, president of the Corvair Houston club hosting the event, said the first regional meeting was held in Brenham 25 years ago, so they felt it was appropriate to come back for their 25th.
Check your engine coolant. It will be a hot day for cruising.
