BRENHAM POLICE WARNING OF UTILITY SCAM

  

The Brenham Police Department is advising of a phone scam involving utility meters.

Assistant Chief Lloyd Powell says multiple people have contacted city hall reporting that someone claiming to be a City of Brenham employee is calling to tell them they need to replace their electric meter immediately, or else their service will be cut off.

According to Powell, the calls have targeted residents, businesses and hotels. 

Powell says the city does not conduct business in this manner.  In addition, any utility transactions will be done directly through the city, not through an alternate payment system like PayPal or Venmo.

Anyone who receives a call like this should contact Brenham City Hall’s main number at 979-337-7200 to verify the status of their utility account and equipment.  They should also report the scam call to the Brenham Police Department at 979-337-7337.
