SEVEN WOUNDED IN SHOOTING NEAR PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY

Seven people were injured after a shooting Sunday night sparked by an argument at a homecoming event near Prairie View A&M University.

According to a press release this (Monday) morning from the Waller County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred just after 10 p.m. in the 35000 block of Cameron Road, near FM 362.

Deputies at the scene learned that four adult women, two adult men and a male juvenile were shot while attending a trail ride pasture party.  The sheriff's office says the event was being held in conjunction with a Prairie View A&M homecoming party, but the university states it was not an official campus event and was not affiliated with Prairie View A&M.

All victims suffered gunshot wounds to their lower extremities, but none of the injuries are expected to be life-threatening.

Investigators say a verbal dispute between several people preceded the shots fired.  Over 1,000 people are believed to have attended the event.

Security was provided by Waller County Precinct 3 Constables and a private security agency.  On Sunday, the sheriff’s office stated that the mass gathering was approved by the county judge, and the party promoter agreed to follow the judge’s instructions.  However, the sheriff’s office said in this morning’s release that “None of the security protocols that were established by the permitting body and agreed to by the promoter were found to be followed at the time of the incident.”

Investigation is ongoing.  The sheriff’s office has not identified any suspects or announced any arrests.

Prairie View A&M released a statement this morning regarding the incident:

PVAMU is both saddened and troubled by the senseless act of violence that occurred in Waller County last night. Although this was not an official PVAMU homecoming event and was unaffiliated with the University, our campus community is deeply concerned for those injured and all affected by this incident. The Waller County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

  1. Counties have interlocal agreements to provide area assistance when needed and everyone benefits from this. If there was an oil field explosion or if a tornado destroyed a community, Washington County would welcome and call for outside assistance. This is no different. I am concerned to see posts putting cost of service over the providing of medical response to those in need. The event was poorly planned and security was lacking. The organizer made a huge sum of money from entrance fees. I can only hope that these events do not return to Washington County.

  2. As a concerned citizen of Washington County I would like to know approximately how long our county was without the services of the EMS Helicopter as it was being used for this emergency last night? Please enlighten the citizens of our county as well to whether or not we get reimbursed for this use as well. I would sure hope so with the budget deficit the EMS has at this time!

  3. a thousand people and no law enforcement present that’s just asking for trouble. They make people have law enforcement officers at wedding receptions and they didn’t have any for a college home coming party that’s just plan STUPID!!!!

    1. Read the Article. It said Security was provided by the Waller County Constables and by a Private Security Agency. Also this event was not in affliation with the Prarie View Homecoming.

  4. I sure hope Washington County gets reimbursed for the use of their Air Ambulance during this tragic event, especially since there is such a deficit in the budget due to the lack of funding for this helicopter.

    1. I hope Washington county is reimbursed as well, seeing as how at 10 am, none shot last night suffered life threatening injuries.. that was per the news.

      1. Part of the reason those injuries are not life threatening is thanks to those medics and the fast transportation to a major trauma center via helicopter. The cost to the taxpayers is a pittance compared to life saving treatment. Is money really the primary issue here? Seriously?

  5. The new showed the air ambulance chopper from Washington county there taking off. I taught it was Washington county only Is our tax dollars paying for doing work in that county. Or how we getting paid back
