The Texas Association of School Boards has named Dr. Nicole Poenitzsch of Bellville ISD as the Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. Poenitzsch received the award at a special presentation on Saturday at txEDCON24 in San Antonio, which is an annual event hosted by TASB and the Texas Association of School Administrators.

The award, which spotlights outstanding education leaders from across Texas, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

The 11-member committee said it selected Poenitzsch as the winner of this year’s award, citing her servant leadership, commitment to ensuring opportunities for all of her students and collaborative approach to problem-solving.

Member Services Committee Chair Nick Phillips said Dr. Poenitzsch was notable for bringing both joy and enthusiasm to her work, plus a willingness to jump in to do whatever it takes to support her students, including stepping into the classroom as needed.

He added, “She not only sees education as a means of opportunity for children, but she also is clearly very proud to be a Texas public educator.”

Poenitzsch has served as the superintendent of Bellville ISD since 2019. The district spans 385 square miles and enrolls about 2,300 students in Austin County.

In her remarks before an audience of hundreds at txEDCON24, Poenitzsch thanked her family and the Bellville ISD team, including her Board of Trustees, which she commended for their commitment to the district’s students.
