The City of Brenham on Tuesday announced
Powell's plans to retire after over 27 years of service
with the department.
The City of Brenham announced Powell’s retirement in a press release late Tuesday. Powell has served in the Brenham Police Department since August 1997, becoming captain in August 2015 and assistant chief in June 2023. He was promoted to interim chief in March 2024 and became the full-time chief this past July.
Powell said in the release that serving Brenham and its citizens “has been one of the greatest honors of my career.” He said he is grateful for the officers and staff who help keep the community safe and that he “will always cherish the memories and relationships built over the years.”
Powell told KWHI via text that there is “no drama” involved with this decision and that it was “just the right time.” KWHI plans to speak further soon with Powell about his announcement.
The city wrote in its release that the department has “made significant strides in community policing, officer training, and crime prevention efforts” under Powell, and that “Powell’s leadership and commitment to public safety have left a lasting impact on the City and its residents.”
Mayor Atwood Kenjura and City Manager Carolyn Miller both wished Powell the best in his retirement. Kenjura said Powell has been “an exceptional officer and a committed leader in our community”, while Miller said he has showcased a “passion for strengthening relationships between law enforcement and residents and a genuine heart for the people of Brenham.”
City of Brenham Communications and Public Relations Manager Melinda Gordon said there is not yet a firm date for when Powell’s retirement will take effect, as he wishes to make sure any loose ends are taken care of before he departs.
The city says it will share additional details in the near future regarding a retirement celebration and transition plans.
