BLINN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM NAMED A FUTURE EDUCATION MODEL

The Blinn College District’s Health Information Management (HIM) Program has earned national recognition for giving students real-world training that prepares them for successful healthcare careers.

Blinn’s program was named a Future Education Model by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Health Information Management (CAHIIM). The program stands out for its forward-thinking approach, as students use simulation software that mirrors the real work they would do in hospitals and clinics, giving them hands-on experience before they graduate.

“This recognition highlights our dedication to providing our students with the most innovative training and educational resources,” Program Director Jaime Schroeder said. “By using software that simulates real-world scenarios, our students graduate with the tools they need to immediately embark on rewarding careers. In addition, their projects and assignments are evaluated by external professionals who work in the field, which provides an extra layer of preparation.”

Blinn’s HIM Program is offered 100% online and prepares graduates for careers such as HIM technicians, medical coders, and billing specialists. These professionals play a vital role in healthcare by ensuring that medical records are accurate, secure, and properly managed. Their work directly supports patient safety, quality care, and better decision-making in hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, and more.

Students also gain valuable teamwork experience by working with Blinn’s Vocational Nursing Program. HIM Program students will tailor a recorded presentation for nursing students on the importance of adhering to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

“Health information specialists regularly collaborate with nurses and other health care professionals,” Schroeder said. “By providing our students with this experience while they are still in our program, they graduate with yet another layer of preparation and confidence as they enter the workforce.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national demand for health information technologists and medical registrars is expected to grow 15% between 2024 and 2034 with a median salary of $67,310.

In addition to the 60-credit-hour HIM AAS degree, Blinn offers a 36-credit-hour Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Certificate and a 9-credit-hour Occupational Skills Award in Health Information, all of which can be completed entirely online. These credentials serve as a solid foundation for pursuing additional education and offer flexible career opportunities, including remote work.
