BRENHAM POLICE CHIEF GOODMAN GIVES HIS THOUGHTS ON OPEN CARRY RULES
January 1st marks the first day that licensed handgun owners may openly carry their firearms, as long as the gun remains in a shoulder or belt holster.
Brenham Police Chief Craig Goodman on Thursday released this statement regarding the ability to openly carry legally-held firearms:
The rules related to where and when a license holder may openly carry are essentially identical to where and when a concealed handgun license holder can carry under current law.
- Open carry requires weapons to be carried either in a shoulder or belt holster.
- Signage is required for businesses that prohibit weapons.
The League has prepared a more comprehensive Q&A on the subject, which includes a chart of where weapons are allowed. The Q&A is available at www.tml.org under ‘Legal Research” by clicking on the “Public Safety” tab. Also available is the Texas Department of Public Safety sign translation and a citizen handout explaining the law.
Open carry allows for the public display of a weapon secured inside a holster. Citizens should always be vigilant and notify the police if they believe the law is being violated and/or recklessness is occurring by an individual with a weapon.
