TXDOT KICKS OFF “PLAN WHILE YOU CAN” CAMPAIGN

  

The Texas Department of Transportation kicked off its “Plan While You Can” campaign on Tuesday, urging drivers to make plans for a safe and sober ride home during the Labor Day holiday. Part of the campaign is a multi-city tour, which will make a stop in College Station this year.

TxDot Executive Director, James Bass, says that drinking and driving is a big problem in Texas. During the Labor Day holiday period in 2015, there were 359 alcohol-related crashes in Texas that led to 12 fatalities and 36 serious injuries. The “Plan While You Can” campaign aims to combat the problem. It lasts through September 5th and marks an increase in DWI enforcement throughout Texas.

The campaign features a multi-city tour showcasing an interactive dodgeball game that uses technology to educate the public about the effects of alcohol on a person’s reflexes. As participants play, virtual drinks are added and the players’ on-screen avatars become less able to dodge incoming “dodgeballs.” The game demonstrates how even one drink can slow reaction times. The tour will come to College Station on August 25th from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

In Bryan and College Station, the number of alcohol-related crashes in 2015 totaled 208. This resulted in 6 fatalities and 12 serious injuries.

TxDOT strongly encourages everyone to plan for a sober ride before going out. In addition to potentially life threatening crashes, drivers under the influence of alcohol could face up to $17,000 in fines and fees, jail time and loss of their driver’s license.
