BLINN TO HOLD FALL GRADUATION CEREMONY TODAY
Blinn College will recognize approximately 300 graduates during its Fall commencement today (Thursday) at the Brazos Center in Bryan.
The graduating class includes 84 honors graduates – 13 of whom will graduate summa cum laude. To graduate summa cum laude, students must earn a 3.9 grade-point average (GPA) or higher. Students must earn a 3.5 GPA to graduate with honors.
The ceremony will include two student commencement speakers – Corey Kirby, a Paralegal Program graduate from the Bryan Campus, and Berenice Vazquez, who graduates from the Sealy Campus with an associate degree in liberal arts.
Kirby first began taking courses at Blinn as a high school dual credit student and completed his associate degree in English before transferring to Texas A&M University in 2012. Upon graduating from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Arts double majoring in English and philosophy, he enrolled in Blinn’s Paralegal Program, was elected Student Body President for the Blinn-Bryan Campus, and served on the leadership board for the Legal Assistant Student Organization.
Vazquez is the first of four children in her family to attend college, and the first from both her father’s and mother’s families to graduate from college. She plans to attend Prairie View A&M University in the spring, where she will seek a bachelor’s degree in education.
According to figures compiled by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), Blinn’s academic transfer rate of 39.5 percent is almost double the state-wide average of 22 percent. Out-of-district Blinn students who take 30 credit hours during the 2016-17 academic year will save $3,835, or 44.3 percent, compared to state residents at the average Texas public university, according to figures from the THECB’s CollegeForAllTexans.com. The Blinn Foundation also offers more than 200 endowed scholarships available only to Blinn students.
Registration currently is open for both the Winter Minimester and Spring semester. The Winter Minimester runs Dec. 16-22 and Jan. 3-11, and registration is available through Dec. 15.
