GRAND JURY: LEE COUNTY DEPUTY JUSTIFIED IN SHOOTING BURTON MAN
A Lee County Grand Jury has determined a deputy was justified in shooting a Burton man back in February.
The grand jury met on April 28th and determined no charges should be filed against Deputy David Jessup, who shot 66-year-old Robert Louis Luza during an incident on February 8th.
The night of the incident, Deputies David Jessup and Bryan Holloway responded to a call of a suspicious person on CR 424, just north of FM 141 near Dime Box. When they arrived on the scene, they found Luza dressed only in his underwear.
Luza refused to cooperate with the deputies and against repeated commands, he jumped into his truck. The deputies deployed a taser, which was unsuccessful in subduing him. Luza then managed to get behind the wheel of his truck and rammed the deputies’ patrol vehicle. It was then that a Deputy Jessup shot Luza three times, hitting him in the chest twice.
Luza was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan. He is reportedly still recovering.
The Texas Rangers investigated the incident and presented their findings to the Lee County Grand Jury for their consideration.
