BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF WASHINGTON CO. REOPENS FACILITY FOR SUMMER CAMP

Summer camp activities began today (Monday) for the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County, although they are taking a much different shape this year due to COVID-19.

Instead of offering the standard eight-week summer program, the club is providing four two-week-long sessions and reducing the amount of children served at a time under the program.  Some of the facility’s rooms have been rearranged to accommodate social distancing measures, such as the gym, which has been split to serve both as a classroom and a basketball court.

Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Stephanie Wehring said the change in attendance is the biggest change with this year’s program.

The forty children are spread out across five different rooms, leaving one staff member to watch over eight children each day.  The club will be able to serve a maximum of 160 students across the four sessions being held this summer.

Members will spend most of their time in their designated classroom instead of wandering around the facility.  Extra cleaning procedures have been implemented to help eliminate cross-contamination, and members will undergo daily symptom checks before they can enter the building.  Students are also asked to not bring any personal items or food with them, as the club has partnered with Brenham ISD to provide breakfasts and lunches, along with afternoon snacks.

Wehring said while this year’s program may look much different from programs in previous years, the club is still eager to provide children with a different environment over summer break.

Spots are still available for the club’s second, third, and fourth two-week sessions later this summer.  Anyone interested in registering a child can call 979-277-9383 or visit www.bgc-brenham.org for more information.
