Brenham Junior High and Middle School students won first place in the New World Institute Cities in Space Competition in Austin last Friday.

Each team had to create a virtual or actual 3D model, present the model in front of a judge, and submit a six page essay describing their community and its attributes.

The object of each team was to utilize and expand the talents of the team to create a colony that could sustain 1000 people for a lifetime. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) based project encouraged creative ideas and outside-the-box thinking. After teams formed and picked a leader, they decided the important aspects of a new colony on either Mars, the moon, or in deep space.

The 7th grade first place team called themselves the Star-Staches. The team included students:  Andrew Zschech (team leader), Reece Knebel, Creed Casados, Ella Pieper, Albrie Reed, Caitlin Haese, Charlie Boggan (First Place Winner). They all wore blue mustaches and designed a virtual model that was created on Minecraft. Their design included a giant block of ice that provided water through temperature and condensation.

The 8th grade first place team called themselves the A.R.C. - Architectural Reestablishment Colony. The team consisted of students including: Joshua Cruz (team leader), Rowdy Weidemann, Arabella Maitland, Kirsten Riley, and Amanda Thompson (2nd place winners). The team created a virtual world that provided a specific form of government, which was unique to all other projects.

Other teams from BJHS and BMS included:

S.A.S Team- Micayla Moreno, Kaden Kennedy, Abigail Zissa, Reagan Lange, TaNiyah Walker, Hailey Blanchard, Kinsley Mendoza, Erin Keller, Alexis Lara, Erica Jayden Ladd, and Kristin Blankenburg.

Mars Barz Team- Emily Crawley (team leader), Kaylen Kruse, Moli Ragonis, Ally Trostle, Alessandra Rosales

Intercosmic Space Designers- Kristi Evans (team leader), Kaytlin Evans, Sydney Mason, Matthew Morrison, Derric Chovanic, Jake Wellman.

Suzette Evans sponsored the Brenham Junior High teams and Kassey Nix sponsored the Brenham Middle School team, with the support of Principals Peggy Still and Bryan Bryant.
