CONSTRUCTION SET TO BEGIN ON LEE CO. 290 PROJECT

Ground has been broken on a major highway project in Lee County.

Last Wednesday, officials gathered in Giddings for the kickoff to the project to make Highway 290 a divided highway from the Giddings city limit west to the Lee County Line.

The 28.3-million dollar project will cover an eight mile stretch of 290.  It will include: moving utility lines, purchasing right-of-way, and the actual construction.

The project is expected to be completed by summer of 2021.

Projections are that over the next 20 years, traffic along U.S. 290 is expected to increase to nearly 22,000 vehicles per day.
