DRUG DOG PURCHASE ON AGENDA FOR BURTON CITY COUNCILMEMBERS

Burton City Councilmembers will consider tonight (Tuesday) whether to use donated funds for a new drug dog.

The city recently received a donation to be used for a new drug dog for the Burton Police Department.  The purchase is for $12,900.

The council will also revisit a maintenance contract with Jason Jaster for work on city property.  Duties in the contract include mowing and edging at City Hall, the water well, water tower, and Weeren Park.

Councilmembers tabled action on the contract at the last meeting, bringing up other parts of the city that should be included in the maintenance agreement.

Also in session, the council will consider approving the addition of 30 cubic yard dumpsters for quarterly cleanup of heavy or large trash.

The council will meet this evening at 5:30 p.m., at Burton City Hall.

  1. Has anyone not noticed the dilapidated homes and yards being utilized as garbage dumps? Burton is fast becoming Somerville, which is not something any tax paying citizen should be proud of. Use the money wisely Mr. Mayor!

  2. This is not being explained correctly! The dog was donated (free)to the police department and not being paid for by Burton ! So the money that they have is only for a drug dog ! It can’t be used for other things ! This is what the outside source gave the money for ! If not used to replace the retired police dog the money will go back to the outside source that donated this money (specifically) for a drug dog ! Not for roads or anything else ! And if that happens I can promise this outside source will never donate to Burton again ! When you get something donated free seems like the Burton community should be a little more grateful!

  3. Pretty sure that if the funds were donated by an individual/business/organization for the purchase of a drug dog, then they are restricted to that purchase. They aren’t unrestricted funds and able to be used elsewhere.

    1. Agreed! Something seems off based upon the previous comment. If ONLY donations are being utilized, then there should not be a cause for concern. However, if this is up to the discretion of the mayor or council, then perhaps this should be put up to a vote by the citizens. Our town is is losing potential homeowners to Round Top and Fayetteville due to the lack of code enforcement. Junked yards are unsightly and something needs to be done or Burton will be a dead town.

  4. We need to take the money to fix up the roads in town and not spend it on a drug dog. Not to smart

  5. I feel like the purchase of a new drug dog is completely unnecessary. There are so many drugs being used and sold right there in the town of Burton clearly and no one is even researching those. I agree the dog would be helpful with cars passing on Hwy 290 but what are we going to do about the drugs being used and dealt right there in our small little community. Where are our priorities?
