Update: Deputy Calvin (C.J.) Lehmann, age 32, is still in critical condition at an Austin hospital, after he was shot in the face while serving a warrant Thursday night.

Lehmann was with other Fayette County Deputies and La Grange Police Officers in attempting to capture a wanted felon. The felon, possessing a warrant for failing to register as a sex offender, was reported to have just assaulted a La Grange Police Officer.

After the suspect fled to the Carter Motel and barricaded himself inside one of the rooms, Lehmann volunteered to take the lead in breaching the door, as he was wearing a ballistic vest.

Upon breaching, the suspect began firing, and Lehmann was shot in the face with a shotgun.  The suspect was taken into custody after a four-hour standoff.

Fayette County Sheriff’s Lieutenant David Beyer says Lehmann has lost sight in one eye, and hospital staff are working to save his other eye.

The La Grange Police Department, along with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, will continue to release more information about the incident and Lehmann’s condition.

Anyone who would like to assist Lehmann financially may make a contribution to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Memorial and Benevolent Society. All funds received will go directly to Lehmann to help him financially.  Donations can be made by putting “CJ” in the “For” section.  Donations can be sent to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office at 1646 North Jefferson Street in La Grange.

Original Story: A Fayette County deputy was critically wounded while attempting to serve a warrant last (Thursday) night in La Grange.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said two deputies were serving a felony warrant for failing to register as a sex offender.  Deputies served the warrant at around 5 p.m. at a Dollar General.

The suspect pulled a knife and cut one of the deputies, then ran into the Carter Motel and barricaded himself inside one of the rooms.  When deputies made their way to the suspect’s room at the motel, he began firing and shot one of the deputies in the head.

The deputy, who has not been named, was taken to an Austin hospital and is in critical condition.  After a four-hour standoff, the suspect was taken into custody.
