WASHINGTON CO. AUTHORITIES WARN AGAINST NEW PHONE SCAM

Washington County authorities are once again cautioning people of phone scams.

According to Brenham Police Chief Allwin Barrow and Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak, their departments have been getting reports of a new phone scam harassing citizens.

Barrow and Hanak say the current caller uses the number 979-531-2084, which appears as a “non-existent number” to anyone attempting to call it.  However, if the number calls someone and the recipient says the word “yes” to any of their questions, that response is recorded and used in the scammer’s criminal activities.

Even if caller ID says that the caller is unknown, but displays a 979 area code, that caller is very likely a scammer who has used online applications to disguise their number.  The sheriff’s office and police department take complaints about these types of scams regularly, but since the scammers are typically from foreign countries, authorities have a difficult time identifying them.

Barrow and Hanak urge citizens to call the police department or sheriff’s office if they feel they have been subjected to a scam, or if they have any questions on how to deal with scam phone calls.  You can call the sheriff’s office at 979-277-6251, and the police department’s non-emergency line at 979-277-7373.

  1. I have been getting missed calls from locals cell phone numbers. When i call back they say they have never called me. This has been happening often. So far they have all sounded like older ladies.
