WCHJA’S ANNUAL JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION CANCELLED

Organizers of the annual Washington County Juneteenth celebration have called off this year’s activities.

The Washington County Historical Juneteenth Association (WCHJA) will not hold Juneteenth activities this year, due to COVID-19.

The celebration normally spans Father’s Day weekend with a parade through downtown Brenham, along with live music and activities at Fireman’s Park.

According to Parade Coordinator Leticia Wills, this year’s Juneteenth Kings and Queens will be shifted to next year’s celebration, so they can get the chance to officially reign over the court.

All other award winners will also be honored at next year’s celebration, which is set for the weekend of June 19, 2021.

  1. WCHJA, thank you!! It was a VERY difficult decision to cancel this year’s event, but given the COVID-19 pandemic, ALL the planning involved, it was the right thing to do. Our people are the most negatively impacted by this horrific virus. Having an event increasing the virus’ spread causing sickness & death is not something to have on anyone’s conscience. You’ll will have a much bigger & better Juneteenth Celebration 2021!

  2. So what is the real truth why the Juneteenth isn’t taking place Leticia Wills because you stated that it was due to the Covid19 but now you’re stating it is due to no funding!! How are you not prepared to not forward when y’all fundraisers every year?? What would be the excuse if we weren’t dealing with Covid19?? Why is there no funding available without a fundraiser having to take place? How is the money being accounted for? And where is the president?? He or she should be speaking to the public not an coordinator!!

  3. Yes this decision was made by the president! It takes time and alot of money to put on this parade and with the current event going on there is no way to plan such an event not knowing if it could still happen

  4. My mother comes back to her hometown every year specifically for the Juneteenth celebration. As I’m sure there are others as well that look forward to this and the different events with members of Pickard High. Why would they make such a hasty decision so soon? It wasn’t a smart decision at all and this is something that people look forward to every year! I’m totally at a loss for words.

  5. This is very sad and sickening for so may reasons but I will only list a few. We should be proud of what this day and celebration brings. Though we are living in a time with Covid 19 which has altered lives , we have to as a people alter our thoughts and way of doing things as well. No reason this celebration should be canceled. Lastly, does the organization have a president? The decisions are being made by the parade coordinator? I like to hear from the president (if one is available) on the decision making process.

  6. I’m not understanding exactly why they would do this!! I’m very saddened by this. Especially since Maifest was postponed; not cancelled. They even had a Birthday celebration. Come on now. Seems like this decision was made by unqualified and inadequate staff!!
