Blinn outscores Panola 28-11 in the fourth quarter

CARTHAGE, Texas – Blinn College women’s basketball trailed for almost all of the first three quarters against Panola College but was able to come from behind in the fourth to pull out a 79-72 victory Wednesday night in Carthage.

The Buccaneers were able to outscore Panola 28-11 in the fourth quarter to improve its record to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in Region XIV play. Blinn has now won three straight games, two of those wins came on the road.

Jeliah Preston led the Buccaneers with 24 points while Ekiya Gray chipped in with 18 points. Ebony Parker scored 14 points, Penina Faumui netted 10 points and Bryanna Taylor scored seven in the win.

“Jeliah just had that look in her eyes that she didn’t want to lose this game,” said Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins. “Everyone stayed positive for the entire game even when we were trailing.”

The first quarter was pretty even as Blinn and Panola were all square at 17-17 after the first 10 minutes. Panola opened up a lead in the second quarter to take a 39-32 lead at the half.

The Panola lead expanded even further in the third quarter as Blinn trailed 61-51 heading into the fourth quarter.

It took a complete balanced effort in the fourth but Blinn was able to rack up 28 points in the final 10 minutes while only allowing 11 points to complete the come from behind victory. Free throw shooting helped tremendously as the Buccaneers made 21-of-23 free throws in the game.

Blinn will be back home Saturday, Jan. 23 when it hosts Bossier Parish Community College at 2 p.m.
