TEXAS GOV. SIGNS BAN ON SANCTUARY CITIES

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has signed the so-called “sanctuary cities” bill.

The law allows police to ask about a person’s immigration status and threatens sheriffs and police chiefs with jail time if they do not cooperate with federal authorities.

The new measure would also fine government entities up to $25,500 each day for not complying with immigration laws and detention requests.

The bill cleared its last hurdle last week in the Republican-controlled Legislature.

Gov. Abbott signed the bill on Sunday with little advance notice on Facebook Live.

"As Governor, my top priority is public safety, and this bill furthers that objective by keeping dangerous criminals off our streets," Abbott said in a press release. "It's inexcusable to release individuals from jail that have been charged with heinous crimes like sexual assault against minors, domestic violence and robbery."

The measure goes into effect September 1st, according to the governor’s office.

  1. Ummm, we can pay taxes to fund Medicaid for illegals and we can raise property taxes to fund schools for illegals BUT don’t spend tax dollars to apprehend illegals and send them back? Enforcement of our present immigration laws has already proved to be a deterrent for illegal immigrants. Legal immigration is a privilege, not a right.

  2. Why do you think the majority of law enforcement is opposed to this law? Do you really think if we reduce the student population by 30% you will get a rollback in taxes? A great deal of our local hospitals revenue comes from Medicaid patients, if revenue is short, they reduce services, charge more, or worse, close the doors. Sales tax revenue will continue to decline. Manual labor shortages will seriously disrupt the states economy and our taxes will continue to rise to support the CURRENT infrastructure. Do we really believe our legislators have thought this thru? Well wake Up! Rural areas and seniors will suffer more than the cities, and the wealthy political contributors will not suffer at all. No one should break the law, but there are better ways to resolve the issue. This barn door should have been seriously closed a long time ago, the damage is done.

    1. The damage is still being done and until the “barn door” as you say is closed once again, we will continue to see ourselves turn into a third world country. 1965 was the year the door got left open, my generation wasn’t around yet but I bet yours was. Our children will suffer an even worse fate of economic and cultural decay than we are seeing. Leave the “doors” open to your own barn if you want but we’re going to shut the community doors and weld the lock shut.
Schools can and should be simply schools, providing education in the basics and vocational training/apprenticeships for those not college bound (which we need much more of than BA’s in this country). We do not need a transportation, feeding, or sports program unless its funded outright by the parents or through donations. For the bleeding hearts, the parents are already getting food stamps, why do we need a redundant feeding program?
Medicaid, news flash, when you don’t have emergency room visits any longer for simply running a fever or a case of the flu or anything for that matter by a non-citizen you don’t lose money and you don’t need to process for a hospital stay just so Medicaid can be billed so at least some money is recovered. Lost revenue, reduced services, and the closed door points are moot.
Property taxes are based on appraisals up to the state level but no one ever talks about the multiplier that they are also based on. We can adjust the multiplier as well as what the funds are spent on at the local level. Sales taxes can be fixed with legislation, the tech exists to locate and distribute those lost dollars going to the Internet of things. Not only that, but when taxes are phased in on an Internet purchase, the local market will be competitive again.
The manual labor shortage is a myth perpetuated by leftists.
As far as infrastructure, if inflation exists then costs will go up. With your wisdom, maybe you can convince everyone to live in town, ride a bike, and donate money to bring back train stations.
Finally, yes this has been thought through and we needed it starting in 1965.

      1. Eric, that was so incredibly well stated. My wife is a teacher is so frustrated by the decay in the quality of public education that is being caused by the influence illegal aliens who cannot speak English and seem unable or unwilling to provide their children with basic school supplies and to promote the idea that education is important. The cost of illegal immigration on our society is huge and it needs to be stopped completely. Do it legally or get sent home!

  3. Let’s just look the other way on every criminal and see how safe you feel.

  4. Our local law enforcement agencies operating costs are about to significantly increase at the property tax owners expense. Another unfunded mandate from the state officials you elected, so we are ordered to fund the federal immigration departments job. We must pay $55.00 per day for every prisoner in the sheriffs jail and there is a big classified ad in the Banner looking for more jail staff. Not a peep from our county commissioners on the subject. So will this years 10% property tax increase go to the schools since the state will give less, or will the county tap their rainy day fund?? Good luck getting straight answers. And maybe we should stop voting against our own best interests ?

    1. If we enforced our immigration laws we would save billions in education and healthcare. Sounds like a good idea to me.

      1. I think it is a good idea too. What is wrong with police asking your status? If your illegal you shouldn’t be here anyway! Why do they think they can come here and stay illegally? These groups that are sueing Texas why? You are not legal here so why are you mad!!

    2. I agree with Common Sense 100 percent. Another view point is that if I go to the store and steal from them, I will be arrested and prosecuted. This would be due to the fact that I broke the law! Why should someone who is in a position of power be able to break the law because he/she doesn’t agree with it? Law and order is the solution to chaos. And yes $55 a day is steep but the cost to educate a student is over $1000 per year. If someone is sending their kids to school and not paying taxes, that is unfunded as well.
