SCHOOL BOARD HONORS TWO FOR HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF EFFORTS

The Brenham School Board recognized two people for their efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Alton Elementary teacher Kaylee Roznovsky and Blake Brannon with Premier Metal Buyers were honored with the “You Make a Difference” award. On Monday after the storm hit, Roznovsky teamed up with her brother in law Blake Brannon to fill an 18 wheel trailer with donations and take it to families in the devastated area. What started with a single truck load turned into six 18 wheeler trailers and 10 smaller trailers full of donated items that were hauled to communities devastated by hurricane.

Brenham students are continuing the collection efforts. Last week, students at Brenham Elementary School collected school supplies including 77 backpacks. The items were donated to Refugio Elementary School. This week, students at Krause Elementary are collecting school supplies to be donated to the Rockport Schools.

Although the damage from the storm was very limited in the Brenham area, schools here remained closed August 28th and 29th. The school board voted Monday evening to request “missed Days Waivers” from the TEA for those two days.

In other action by the board Monday, they approved partnering with Texas A&M University on Project LISTO. LISTO stands for Literacy-Infused Science using Technology Opportunity. Texas A&M received a $12 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to research the program at the middle school level. 90 fifth grade students at Brenham Middle School have already agree to be part of the program. Their progress in science will be tracked until they complete the 8th grade.

The board also heard reports from each of the principals on how the school year has started off on their campus. They also accepted two donations to the school district: Run for the Youth of Washington County donated $34,000 to the BISD Athletic program. The money was raised during the Blue Bell Fun Run. Also, the Washington County Rotary Club donated $4,000 to the Early Childhood Learning Center. That center opened this fall in the old Alton Elementary School location and already has 202 pre-K students enrolled.
