WEISS HOMER; SOLID PITCHING LEADS CUBS TO OPENING NIGHT WIN
Pierce Weiss’ two-run homer was the difference as the Brenham Cubs took their 2018 opener, 3-2 over the Hutto Hippos.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd at Firemen’s Park, Weiss’ fourth inning blast broke a 1-1 tie, while the Cubs’ bullpen nailed down the win.
Brenham took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Eric Wellmann’s sacrifice fly which scored Jake Olson, who had singled to lead off the inning.
The Hippos tied the game in the bottom of the third on a Cubs’ throwing error that scored Preston Cruz.
Wellmann started the game for the Cubs and went three innings, yielding one unearned run on four hits, while striking out two.
Austin Derkowski came in and picked up the win, yielding one run on two hits in three innings. Chris Kubeczka nailed down the win by throwing a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
Weiss, Olson and Braden McCain each had two hits for the Cubs, while Rylan Heritage and Evan Aschenbeck each had a hit.
The Cubs will now get ready for the Round Rock Hardball Classic, Thursday-thru-Saturday.
The Cubs will face Round Rock (1:00) and Midland (4:00), Thursday at Round Rock; Leander (1:00) and San Antonio Central (4:00), Friday at Leander; and, Frenship (10:00), Saturday at McNeil.
