FAITH MISSION FAITHFUL IN FEEDING THE HUNGRY OF WASHINGTON COUNTY

  

A study by the Texas Hunger Initiative of Baylor University sites there are 13.1 million children in the U.S. are suffering from hunger and 1.7 million in the state of Texas alone.

The National Council on Aging Care states one in six seniors face the threat of hunger and not being nourished in the U.S.

According to Executive Director Rev. Randy Wells, in 2017 Brenham’s Faith Mission provided 5,416 shelter nights to the homeless and 85,986 meals from their Food Pantry program for people living in the shelter, as well as in the community.

Wells says the mandate to care for the poor is not rooted in government but the gospel, saying the goal is to providing a hand-up with respect and dignity.

In 1985 Faith Mission, an ecumenical Christian-based non-profit organization was created to be a clearinghouse for assistance to the poor and working in Washington County.

The local HEB reports that their customers helped raise over $40,000 through their annual Souper Bowl of Caring.

That food in distributed weekly through the Faith Mission Pantry at 500 E. Academy St., and helps individuals stretch their resources.

CEO, JD Young says, “the food pantry program allows us to meet one of the most basic human needs, but it’s more than that it allows us to build relationships with some of the most vulnerable people in our county. “
