JUDGE DENIES FORMER JAILER’S MOTION FOR EARLY RELEASE

A local judge has ruled that a former Washington County jailer must serve out the rest of his sentence for official oppression.

(Burleson Co. Jail)

Judge Carson Campbell has ruled that former jailer Christopher Kulow (Coo-low) must serve the second half of his year-long sentence on the Class-A misdmeanor.

Kulow was found guilty back in 2015 after surveillance video evidence showed him attack a Washington County Jail inmate, who was strapped to a chair.

Kulow and his attorneys claim he deserved “day by day good time credit for time served.”  The motion said County Sheriff Otto Hanak had applied the credit to other inmates who—like Kulow—had been designated as jail ‘trustees’.

Hanak testified he personally “never authorized the early release of prisoners.”

Hanak says three previous early-release cases were done without his consent or knowledge.

Kulow is being held in the Burleson County Jail, due to safety concerns.

Judge Campbell denied Kulow’s motion after a two-hour hearing, Friday afternoon in Brenham.
