AUSTIN COUNTY CITIZENS FRUSTRATED WITH COMMISSIONERS OVER JAIL PROJECT
Austin County citizens expressed frustration with the Commissioners Court’s approach to improving the county jail at last week’s meeting.
During the meeting, one citizen came forward and said the Court has been “kicking the can down the road” with continued delays and tabling of construction projects. He then placed a rusty aluminum can in front of the commissioners, comparing the jail’s condition to that of the can.
Commissioners have been looking at different options for renovating the current facility, or building a new jail. The Court discussed possible construction projects regarding the jail, as well as the sheriff’s office and EMS stations, at the meeting.
Austin County Judge Tim Lapham said the court would have to make a decision on plans by the fourth week of July, in order to send a proposal to voters for a bond election.
