LOCAL SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVES SPEAK AT EDUCATION FORUM
A near-capacity crowd filled the Blinn College Student Center banquet room this (Tuesday) afternoon, with people anxious to hear from three prominent school officials on the state of their schools.
Burton ISD Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy, Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson, and Blinn College District Chancellor Dr. Mary Hensley all spoke at this year’s Washington County Education Forum, giving updates on each of their districts.
Each representative looked to the future, expressing excitement for the upcoming school year, and citing improvements made in their districts. Dr. Edna Kennedy announced a number of enhancements to existing programs, and commended students on their recent performance, both academically and athletically. She also reiterated the importance of school security.
Dr. Walter Jackson touted the naming of Brenham ISD’s Board of Trustees as Region 6 Board of the year, as well as the academic accomplishments of the students in the district. He also named a wide number of academic programs—such as AVID, CSI, Gateway, EMERGE, and the STEAM academy— designed to help students succeed and gain entry into prestigious colleges.
Dr. Mary Hensley cited Blinn College’s enrollment numbers and transfer rates, as well as upcoming renovations to school facilities such as the Rankin Agricultural Complex, and new facilities like the Mill Creek Residence Hall.
A short question and answer segment concluded the forum, with questions asking the school representatives about funding and AP classes.
A small group of protestors gathered outside the Blinn College Student Center, voicing their disapproval with Burton ISD’s current administration.
