BRENHAM POLICE RECEIVE GRANT FROM LCRA

The Brenham Police Department can now purchase a new removable bollard system, after receiving a $23,500 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) Tuesday.

Ruemke, Brenham Police Department public safety systems administrator; Pamela Jo "PJ" Ellison, LCRA Board member; Todd Ashorn, Brenham Police Department; Allwin Barrow, chief of police; Curtiss Schoen, Brenham Police Department sergeant; Crystal Locke, City of Brenham community services; Carolyn Miller, City of Brenham assistant city manager; Kelvin Raven, Brenham Police Department sergeant; and Lloyd Powell, Brenham Police Department operations captain.

The 47 movable bollards will help control traffic and protect the public during downtown events, by enabling police to block off downtown streets for pedestrians.

The bollards will help prevent damage to property and threats to life from vehicles during festivals and other special events.

Brenham Public Works Director Dane Rau says the new bollard system will allow police to close down streets and prevent traffic from entering, without the need for officers at each intersection.

Rau said the removable bollards work well for areas that switch between pedestrian and vehicular use.

The community grant is awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program.

The program provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, and other nonprofit organizations.

The program is part of an effort by the LCRA to give back to the communities it serves. The City of Brenham is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers, and a partner in the grant program.

Applications for the next round of grants will be accepted through next January.  For more information, visit www.lcra.org/cdpp.
