TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKER AWARDED TO CIVIL WAR CAMP IN WASHINGTON CO.

The Texas Historical Commission has recognized the site of a Civil War camp in Washington County with an official historical marker.

Camp Felder was the site of a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp, located about seven miles north of Chappell Hill, just west of FM 1155.  The camp also served as a base for a Confederate cavalry regiment and two companies of the Frontier Regiment.

Approximately 500 United States soldiers and sailors were held in Camp Felder in October 1864.  It is believed that between 43 and 78 prisoners died at the camp, although the exact location of their graves is unknown.

Washington County Historical Commission Chairman Dr. Wilfred Dietrich said this marker will not only provide awareness of the area’s history to the community, but it will also serve as a building block for local tourism.

A dedication ceremony to celebrate the event will be held January 22nd, at the Chappell Hill Historical Society’s monthly meeting.  The public is invited to attend the meeting, which will be held at the Historical Society Museum on 9220 Poplar Street in Chappell Hill, at 6 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served.

  1. Over/Under on how long this will be up before being removed for being offensive? I’m sure someone from 1864 can tell us.

  2. Be careful. Historical monuments such as these are seen as racist to many. I hope they did their research so this piece of history is not removed and chose to be forgotten.
