BELLVILLE CITY COUNCIL APPROVES $100,000 TURNVEREIN GRANT
The City of Bellville will continue onward with restoration of the Turnverein Pavilion.
At a recent meeting, the Bellville City Council approved a $100,000 grant from the Bellville Economic Development Corporation (BEDC), for the Turnverein Pavilion Restoration Project.
The grant will take effect after around $420,000 worth of renovations takes place for the pavilion, which was built in 1897.
Earlier this month, the BEDC met and voted 4-2 in favor of the grant, which will be funded after Plan B is completed. The plan calls for nearly all of the pavilion’s restoration, but does not include air conditioning.
The Turnverein group had previously sought $400,000 from the BEDC and a guaranteed loan of $500,000, hoping that air conditioning would be added to the project. If it were included, the project’s high-end estimates would have landed around $1.1 million.
The Turnverein group has raised over $300,000 in donations and grants, and hopes to raise around $200,000 more. The BEDC has previously helped with the project, giving $73,000 for seed money, as well as architect and engineering studies.
