St. Peter’s Episcopal Church has donated proceeds from its annual Men’s Community Chili Supper to a mentoring program at Alton Elementary School.

The Children Are Really Special (CARS) program received a $500 donation from St. Peter’s Chili Supper, which raises funds for local community organizations.

The CARS program has been a part of Brenham ISD for over 20 years, providing positive adult role models to improve the literacy skills of elementary students through one-on-one mentoring.

Several St. Peter’s parishioners currently serve as mentors for the program, such as Father Stephen Whaley.  Father Whaley said the program helps children in the community gain a strong foundation in reading, so they can become productive citizens.

Alton Elementary School CARS Director Lynn Prinz said teachers and students are very appreciative of the church’s donation.  The funds will be used to buy new classroom books and supplies, games focusing on reading skills, and books for students to take home to their families.
