CORRECTION: CUBS STILL HAVE SLIM PLAYOFF HOPES

The Brenham Cubs’ run of 35-straight trips to the high school baseball playoffs is in danger of coming to an end..

Waller scored three runs in the sixth inning to come back to beat the Cubs, 5-3, Tuesday night in Waller.  That coupled with a Magnolia win, has Brenham 6-7 in district, while Waller and Magnolia are 7-6.

KWHI earlier reported that Waller's win ended the Cubs' playoff hopes due to an incorrectly reported Waller district record.

Cubs' head coach Lanny Williams corrected the error, confirming that all three teams were 6-6 in district headed into last night's action.  That means the Cubs, Waller and Magnolia are all still alive in the playoff hunt going into Friday's final night of the regular season.

The Cubs must beat Waller, Friday night, while Rudder (2-11) must win at Magnolia and force a three-way tie for the fourth and final playoff berth.  That would mean Saturday playoff games.

The Cubs (21-11/6-7) built a 2-0 lead with a run in the third and another in the fourth.

Brenham got on the board when Evan Aschenbeck’s sacrifice fly scored Garrison Weiss.  They extended the lead to 2-0 when Seth Diggs drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

After the Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2, the Cubs reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth on Carson Draehn’s solo home run.

Carson Draehn is congratulated by his teammates after his solo home run in the 6th.

But, Waller rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth on three singles and two walks.

The Cubs got a base runner aboard in the seventh but stranded that runner as the game ended.

The loss means the Cubs must beat Waller, Friday night, while Rudder (2-11) must win at Magnolia and force a three-way tie for the fourth and final playoff berth.

Brenham will close out the 2019 season Friday night, when they host Waller on Seniors’ night.  The game can be heard live on AM 1280 KWHI, FM 101.7 and www.kwhi.com, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:40.
