LOCAL BBQ RESTAURANTS FEATURED IN NEW ‘TEXAS MONTHLY’ TOP LIST

  

Texas Monthly’s latest list of the best new barbecue joints features a trio of restaurants in the Brazos Valley.

The magazine’s midterm report on the top-25 list, which was released Monday, includes LJ’s BBQ in Brenham, 1775 Texas Pit BBQ in College Station, and Brett’s Backyard Bar-B-Que in Rockdale.  The midterm report features newcomers to the competitive Texas barbecue scene.

The author, Texas Monthly Barbecue Editor Daniel Vaughn, said in his report on LJ’s BBQ that he’s as much a fan of the “sweet and salty ribs and the tender, smoky brisket” as he is the “collard greens with bacon and the creamy macaroni and cheese”.  He said the restaurant puts an equal emphasis and side, giving customers “the best of both worlds”.

In College Station, Vaughn said 1775 Texas Pit BBQ may not look like much, but the “peppery pork ribs”, “smoky brisket”, and “juicy turkey breast with a touch of smoked paprika” keeps customers coming back.  He also said customers frequently order double portions of the corn casserole and loaded mashed potatoes.

In the center of Rockdale, Brett’s Backyard Bar-B-Que has, according to Vaughn, “nothing to avoid on the menu”.  He said “an all-beef variety brings the Texas barbecue flavor; a little heat comes with the jalapeño link; and the pico de gallo sausage is like a smoked version of chorizo”. He also recommends getting a Nutter Butter banana pudding for dessert.
