A pair of proclamations are being read in Brenham, recognizing the economic impact of travel and tourism nationwide.

The 36th Annual National Travel and Tourism Week is being held next week, from May 5-11.  A proclamation was read Thursday at Brenham City Council, and will be read Tuesday at Washington County Commissioners Court.

Proclaiming National Travel and Tourism Week for Brenham and Washington County recognizes the many ways these activities contribute to the economic success of the area.

City of Brenham Tourism and Marketing Director Jennifer Eckermann said this year’s theme, “Travel Matters”, recognizes that travel and tourism supports one in nine American jobs, including 690 in Washington County.  She said the community is called to join them in “saluting this important industry”.

According to Eckermann, in addition to the jobs supported locally, travel and tourism generated nearly $6 million in local tax revenues for Brenham in 2017 and $9.1 million for Washington County in 2018.  These local revenues also translate to an annual tax benefits for area residents of more than $800 per household.

Local travel supporter Barry Brass said he has seen firsthand how much travel matters in this community.  He said, as a retired businessman and volunteer historian, he is “eager to welcome even more visitors here to enjoy the experiences our area offers”.
