PARKS REMAIN CLOSED AT LAKE SOMERVILLE FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

Many people like to head to the lake on Memorial Day, to mark the beginning of summer.  However, those thinking about visiting Lake Somerville may need to make plans elsewhere.

Levels at the lake are still high after the storms earlier this spring, and many of the camp sites at the park are still closed.  The lake sits above 252 feet, over 14 above the full pool of 238 feet, and just six feet under flood pool at 258 feet.

Lake Manager Russell Meier said he is expecting a decreased amount of visitors, as a result.

Meier said anyone who is still planning on going out should be extremely careful, as there is still floating debris along with submerged items like barbecue pits and picnic tables.

Meier said he’s not certain when the affected parks will be reopened, as waters need to go down, debris removed, and repairs made.  He hopes they will be open before the end of summer.

Meier noted the floodgates at the lake are open, releasing water into the Brazos River.
