LOCAL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS REQUESTING NEW VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer fire departments in Washington County are asking for help.

After several fires this month that required the assistance of multiple, if not all, county volunteer departments, officials have expressed the need for additional volunteers.

Prairie Hill Volunteer Fire Deputy Chief Doug Zwiener says the Washington County Firefighter’s Association (WCFFA) is currently trying to address long-term firefighting needs in the county with dwindling volunteer numbers, while still providing constituents the best service possible for the money they are paying.

Zwiener admits the problem runs deeper than just the need for volunteers.

Zwiener attributes the lack of volunteers to changing lifestyles that leave little time for volunteer activities.  He also says that, while there is a real need for young firefighters, anyone’s help is appreciated.

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the county’s volunteer departments, or in potentially becoming a volunteer, is encouraged to attend one of the local fire department’s bi-monthly meetings.  The dates and times for those meetings are available online, at www.wcffaonline.com.

  1. Was wanting to join here in Brenham but it seems like it’s just free labor at the Fireman’s Training Center. Don’t wanna join to be a cleaner.

    1. I don’t think that is a fair statement to the hard working members of the BFD. Do you realize where the money raised from the Training Center goes? Back into the community by purchasing need equipment for the Department.

  2. While I support the local VFDs, if they would stop trying to run them like a paid department they would probably have greater success in retaining current volunteers and attracting new volunteers.
