UNITY THEATRE OPENS 25TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON WITH “TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD”

Unity Theatre in Brenham will soon present the opening act of its 25th Anniversary season.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama To Kill a Mockingbird will take the Main Stage at Unity Theatre starting on Thursday, September 26th.

Published in 1960 by Harper Lee, the novel has sold over 30 million copies and been made into an award-winning film. The version being produced at Unity Theatre is a stage adaptation by Christopher Sergel, who was given special permission by Lee to write it.

The story takes place in 1935, where young Scout and her brother, Jem, are being raised in a small southern town by their widowed father, Atticus Finch, and their housekeeper, Calpurnia. After a young black man is accused of a terrible crime, lawyer Atticus defends him in a trial that sends violent waves through the town.  The play explores prejudice, compassion, and the strength of those who fight injustice and have the courage to do what is right.

New this season, Unity Theatre will offer a Guest Artist Workshop Series. Each workshop will be taught by one of the actors featured in the show running at the time.  The workshop presented during the run of To Kill a Mockingbird will be taught by the actor playing Atticus, Tom Prior, who is a theatre professor at Sam Houston State University.  The program, entitled “Approaching a Monologue as a Scene”, will take place on Saturday, October 5th from 2 to 4 p.m., and is for adults 18 and up.

The play will show on the Main Stage for three weeks at Unity Theatre, beginning with a preview performance on September 26th, which includes a talk-back with the cast and crew following the performance.  The show runs each weekend through Sunday, October 13th, with show times of 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Circle Member reservations start today (Tuesday). Subscribers can make their reservations starting Monday, and tickets go on sale to the public on the 16th.  For ticket information, visit www.unitybrenham.org.
