BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD DISCUSSES INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDAR

Next Year’s Instructional Calendar was a topic of discussion at Monday evening’s Brenham School Board meeting.  Jessica Johnston, Director of Communications & Community Relations, told the board that 471 responses were received from the parental survey.  She said that parents wanted to keep the Labor Day holiday, the full week off for Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas and out before June.  She also said they liked the current mid-week start for the school year.  Currently, the calendar has 171 instructional days, and there are no plans to increase the school day to reduce those.  Johnston also explained that the current calendar retains 6 week grading periods, but that going to a 9 week period is an option.  The committee of volunteers is expected to present the board with a finalized calendar at their meeting early next year.

In other action, the trustees received an update from Paul Aschenbeck, Assistant Superintendent of Operations on the various projects going on in the district.  He reported that the stairwell remodel and HVAC renovations are completed at the High School and that the Crain Group will be returning $21,000 to the district from the projects.  He also reported that the LED replacement project is complete.  The aluminum seating is in on the visitors side at Cub stadium and a few sidewalks and hand rails will be completed soon there.

The board also approved a resolution supporting the Brenham Housing Authority and their continued projects to convert the 300 existing units in Brenham to Project Based Voucher program housing.  Changes in the HUD requirements meant that the Housing Authority needed the resolution in order to qualify for tax credit funding.
