Commissioners read and approved a proclamation declaring March 2, 2020 as Texas Independence Day. Alongside commissioners, Jim Kolkhorst of the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site and Michael Wilson of the Sons of the Republic of Texas spoke on the role Washington County played in establishing Texas independence from Mexico, and the importance of remembering the state’s history.

Kolkhorst also reminded the public that they are invited to join Washington-on-the-Brazos at their Texas Independence Day celebration on Saturday and Sunday.

Also at today’s meeting, commissioners adopted a resolution designating Strand Associates as an engineering service provider for the 2020 Texas Infrastructure Fund. Commissioners in January accepted a bid from GrantWorks of Austin for administrative and engineering services related to the fund, administered by TxDOT.

Commissioners also heard monthly reports from several county departments. During the Road and Bridge department’s monthly report, county Road and Bridge Engineer Ross McCall informed commissioners about the department’s open data portal project through TxDOT, which collects transportation and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data sets for public use.

McCall said the county has started building a database, and tested an application during a recent road closure. He said future applications could include project tracking, grant application tracking, and submitting work requests online.  He added that road projects could be documented fully online with maps, schedules, history, and costs for full transparency.

McCall also said that morale within the Road and Bridge department is very good right now, so while the department is currently down six employees, he is being particular about which employees are added into the mix.

Commissioners also:

  • Approved formal notice from NEWCWS – Corix Utilities, Inc. for a two-inch road bore for a new service meter on Neumann Road in Precinct Three.
  • Approved a re-plat of First of Brenham No. 1 Subdivision, lo #2 on Maass Road in Precinct Three.
