184TH TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION THIS WEEKEND AT WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS

Preparations are nearly complete for the celebration of the 184th Anniversary of Texas independence at the place that started it all.

The Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Site will hold its annual “Texas Independence Day Celebration” this Saturday and Sunday.

The admission-free event will allow visitors to freely wander a bonafide 1836 Texas Army camp and learn how soldiers and their families lived, and witness musket and cannon firings.  There will also be two stages of live music and entertainment, including the Texas A&M Singing Cadets, the Brenham Children’s Chorus, and several folk music performances.

Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation President Cyndee Smith says to not get it mixed up; despite what other places may say, this is where Texas’ fight for independence from Mexico all began.

New this year, living historians will present highlights of the Convention of 1836 both days of the event, showcasing important debates, decisions, and correspondence.

Historical Foundation Administrator Ginger Moreland says the celebration will also feature a special group of descendants of the men who actually signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

The celebration is presented by H-E-B and coordinated by the Washington on the Brazos Historical Foundation, in partnership with the Texas Historical Commission and The Texas Army reenactors. Sponsors for the event include: Washington County, City of Navasota, the Arts Council, Brannon Industrial Group, Spirit of Texas Bank, Briannas Salad Dressing, TB&T Bank and Trust, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, Brenham National Bank, Insite Brazos Magazine, and Larry and Mary Wingham.
