SECOND CASE OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED AT PACK UNIT IN NAVASOTA

A second inmate at the Pack Unit in Navasota has tested positive for COVID-19, bringing Grimes County’s confirmed case count to nine.

A release Thursday from the Grimes County Office of Emergency Management, coordinated with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), stated the inmate, in his 70s, has been isolated from the inmate population.

The first case of COVID-19 at the Pack Unit was 62-year-old Leonard Clerkly, who died Saturday.  The TDCJ said his probable cause of death was pneumonia complicated by COVID-19.  Clerkly had served five years, seven months, and 11 days of a life sentence for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child under 14 out of Tarrant County.

Eleven other inmates determined to have possibly come into contact with either confirmed case have been tested for the virus.  All their tests came back negative.

Data from TDCJ units across the state can be seen here.
