BURTON ISD MAKING PLANS TO RECOGNIZE GRADUATES, TEACHERS
As schools across the state remain closed due to COVID-19, Burton ISD is moving forward with its plans for teacher recognition and senior graduation.
Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy said graduation has been an “ongoing priority discussion” for the district, but it is difficult to make definite plans when the district is uncertain about what type of restrictions will be asked of it.
However, at this time, plans are still to have a live graduation on Friday, May 22nd at 8 p.m. at Panther Stadium. Dr. Kennedy said graduation may look a bit different from what the Burton ISD community is accustomed to, but the district still intends to make it special for seniors. Students will also be honored with a billboard of the senior class on Highway 290, along with individual senior posters lining Main Street in Burton.
Plans are less certain for other year-end events like Burton’s senior trip and prom, but the district plans to make announcements for those as the state begins its gradual reopening process.
For teachers, plans are in place to honor them on Monday, May 4th, during Teacher Appreciation Week, with some special festivities. Dr. Kennedy said staff have worked harder than ever during this time to ensure that students’ needs are taken care of, and their efforts are very much appreciated.
Goodie bags and other treats will be given to staff on Monday during the regular time of meal distribution and remote coursework drop-off and pick-up from noon to 1 p.m.
Dr. Kennedy said she hopes Governor Greg Abbott’s multi-phase reopening of the state will be an opportunity to bring people back together in a way that “ultimately takes into consideration the safety and health of all”. She said she knows Burton ISD will come back “better and stronger than ever because of the challenges of COVID-19”.
Thank you, Burton a ISD, for all your hard work, your planning, your vision, and your support during this pandemic. The decisions that you have made haven’t been easy. I know how difficult it has been.
Your teachers are appreciated. Your students are loved. Your staff is admired.
God bless all.
