The Charlotte Observer reports that this is the first time Childress has sold or given away an original Earnhardt car from his personal collection.

A news release from Richard Children Racing officials doesn’t specify which of The Intimidator’s trademark No. 3 race cars is up for auction.

Earnhardt won a total of 76 Winston Cup races over the course of his career, including the 1998 Daytona 500.  He also earned seven NASCAR Winston Cup championships, tying for the most all-time with Richard Petty and Jimmie Johnson.

In February 2001, Earnhardt died due to injuries sustained in collision during the final lap of the Daytona 500.

Childress tweeted Friday that parting with one of his cars is “a small sacrifice” for him to make.
