Tuesday, La Porte ISD announced it had selected current Brenham ISD superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson as the lone finalist for its superintendent position. The Brenham ISD Board of Trustees met Tuesday to begin discussing the transition and next steps for finding a new superintendent.
Dr. Jackson, who has served as superintendent in Brenham since April 20, 2015, said he is appreciative of everything Brenham has given to him, and looks forward to sharing that with La Porte and the rest of the world. He offered his thanks and appreciation to the Brenham School Board, saying together they have accomplished many significant achievements and kept students “at the forefront” of their decision making.
Dr. Jackson said it has been an honor and a privilege for him and his family to have served as members of the Brenham community and school district.
Specific milestones Dr. Jackson recalled included the development of the Gateway Gifted and Talented Program, the opening of the Early Childhood Learning Center, and renovations to the Brenham ISD Central Office, Krause Elementary School, and Brenham High School. He also called to mind the eight-point jump in the A-F accountability ratings from the Texas Education Agency from 2018 to 2019. Brenham ISD received a scaled score of 87 in 2019, compared to a 79 in 2018. He said the teachers, principals, and school board all help make Brenham ISD a “destination school district”.
Dr. Jackson said this opportunity to go to La Porte ISD would not have been possible without the time he spent in Brenham.
Dr. Jackson also gave his best wishes to the graduating class of 2020. He apologized for seniors having to miss out on many once-in-a-lifetime memories due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but is assured they will do great things in their future.
By law, the La Porte ISD Board of Trustees must wait 21 days, until June 3rd, before voting to hire Dr. Jackson as the new superintendent. In the meantime, he said he will continue to work hard for Brenham ISD and continue planning for the eventual return of in-person classes. He said, whether he is the superintendent or not, the Brenham school system will continue to run smoothly. He added he is confident that the Brenham School Board will select a new superintendent that will be “smarter, more brilliant, more energetic”, and will lead the school district further into the future.
