AUSTIN, TRAVIS CO. “STAY HOME, WORK SAFE” ORDERS EXTENDED TO AUGUST 15TH

The City of Austin and Travis County have extended stay-at-home orders further into the summer after a sharp increase in COVID-19 related hospitalizations.

The “Stay Home, Work Safe” order that was set to expire Monday was extended to August 15th, and updated recommendations have been issued to put Travis County into Stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions.  The Stage 4 guidelines recommend low-risk individuals avoid gatherings of more than ten people, while those at high risk are told to avoid gatherings of more than two people.

The new guidelines also recommend limiting non-essential travel, and put limits on opening workplaces to expanded essential businesses.  They also encourage local businesses to do everything they can to put social distancing measures into place and limit indoor capacity.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler was one of nine Texas mayors to request that Governor Greg Abbott allow local governments to require face coverings in public, but Abbott, while strongly encouraging the public to wear masks, has said he does not intend to make the practice mandatory.

  1. Governor Abbott, in order to curtail this pandemic instead of strongly encouraging the public to wear masks, please make the practice mandatory to wear masks while in public. The sooner we do this, the better off we will be. You became governor because the people spoke, now listen to those who voted you into office and those who didn’t as well. Enough is enough! The thought of it doesn’t look right on me excuse doesn’t work. Texas is bigger than this. Let’s get everyone on board and do the right thing. You opened too many businesses too soon. Now we are having to deal with more cases and more people being hospitalized due to the virus. It’s time to get it right! We all want to live as long as we can. I personally, have grandkids I’d like to see grow up. I bet you do so as well. Do the right thing, please! God bless Texas and the entire U.s.

    1. You mean for a virus that has a 99.74% chance of recovery? Quit being a sheep, MASKS don’t stop the virus! I know facts are a hard thing to understand, but please do. Are the hospitals overrun? Nope, they are LAYING people off so I think we’re fine. Quit getting your info from the media who want to push this over reaction as long as they can.

      1. If Dr. Cub Fan will explain where his / her information is sourced, it seems strange that the media and the federal government relate that just over 5.4% of the total cases known so far (2,178,710) have resulted in death (118,365). That data was taken from the CDC website late on June 19th. While you may not believe all that you hear (or know what the billing department in the hospital that you work at charges), a two or three-week intensive care visit might set you back between $150,000 and $250,000. While I’m certain that a physician like yourself has that much money in savings, for people who have lost their jobs or have a job but no health insurance, that might take a good deal of their lifetime to pay off. Unless, of course, they die. While masks do not filter the virus out and prevent you from catching the disease, they do contain some nasal and oral discharges and prevent them from being spread if the wearer is asymptomatic. Of course you already knew this.

        1. Thank you for agreeing that masks do not prevent catching or spreading the virus, so that’s a mute point. You lose all credibility citing the “media” as a source. They have been all OVER the place….. Don’t wear masks, no wait, wear them, but not the ones that could protect you(N95 FITTED masks), make your own? Everyone needs to shut down, except of course HEB, WalMart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc…..cause you can’t catch it there, but you can at Church, hair salon, etc. Asymptomatic people CAN spread it to everyone, no wait Asymptomatic people CAN’T spread it! You need to clean EVERYTHING, never mind it doesn’t spread on surfaces, only by close contact with someone showing symptoms. I’m well aware of how much a hospital visit costs, especially an ICU visit, but how’s that any DIFFERENT than any other risk you take and ending up there? My info was also from the CDC website, but it was a little older, however, the CDC death rate is only calculated by KNOWN cases, which in scientific circles is ALWAYS exaggerated. Of course you already knew this……..

“What you can safely say […] is that if you divide the number of reported deaths by the number of reported cases [to get the case fatality ratio], you will almost certainly get the wrong answer.”

          – Prof. John Edmunds

“Though there is disagreement about this, some studies have suggested that it is approximately 10 times too high. This would bring the death rate in line with some strains of influenza.”

          – Prof. Mark Woolhouse

  2. Right now Washington County is lucky. They should think about what is happening with the rest of Texas and start to scale back a bit as well.

But as we all know….not our ELECTED officials !!!! They will wait until our numbers get way much higher before they act on anything. Right now they are worried about bringing in all the extra income that they can….so they can spend it on unnecessary things right now !

    1. All the people being laid off, out of work and hurting thank you for being scared of a virus that has a 99.74% chance of recovery.
