DPS NOW OFFERING IN-PERSON APPOINTMENTS FOR DRIVER LICENSE RENEWALS, REPLACEMENTS
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has expanded in-person services available at driver license (DL) offices.
DPS previously began its phased re-opening efforts in May, offering appointments for customers in need of driving tests and those without a Texas driver license, CDL, learner’s permit, or ID card. Now, driver license renewal and replacement appointments will be offered, along with Saturday appointments at select offices.
According to a release from DPS, approximately 700,000 Texans have had their driver license expire since the closure of offices in March. DPS says these office reopenings and in-person appointments should help cut down on the backlog of customers needing renewals.
The previously issued extension for driver license expirations is still in effect, meaning a driver license, CDL, ID, or election identification certificate (EIC) expires on or after March 13th, it falls under the period covered by the State of Disaster Declaration related to COVID-19. The license or ID will remain valid for 60 days after DPS issues a public notice that the extension period for the disaster declaration has been lifted. That 60 day notice has not yet been issued, and Texans still have time to conduct their renewal transactions.
