Officer William Cooper died Monday while on vacation at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.  He was 22 years old.

Cooper began working with the Navasota Police Department in December of 2019, after previously working for the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office.

Navasota Police Chief Shawn Myatt said Cooper was “a very good young man starting his career”, and had “the makings of a great officer”.  He said his heart is deeply saddened at the loss, adding “there will be a hole in the department that will be tough to fill”.  He said the thoughts and prayers of the Navasota Police Department go out to Cooper’s family and friends.

According to a release from the City of Navasota, Cooper will lie in state Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Navasota City Hall for a come and go visitation.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Rattler Stadium in Navasota.  Graveside services will follow at Oakland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, family members ask for donations in William’s honor to a Thin Blue Line Hero Fund, once he has been laid to rest.
